A statue of King Solomon in front of the main entrance to Santiago de Compostela's famous cathedral (one of the most impressive in Europe) in northwest Spain. It has been an important pilgrimage destination since the 9th century when, according to legends, the long lost tomb with the body of St James the Great (the apostle who brought Christianity to the Iberian Peninsula) was discovered. King Alfonso II ordered a church to be built on the site; this building has since been replaced and expanded over the centuries resulting in the current cathedral. The scallop shell carved over the entrance has long been the symbol of The Way of St James pilgrimage routes and features on signs all along its length. The cathedral and Santiago de Compostela's Old Town were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985.
