The last rays of the setting sun turn the whitewashed facade of San Francisco church in Chiu Chiu a lovely golden color. It is one of the oldest churches in Chile and dates from 1611. Chiu Chiu is located in the River Loa valley not far from Calama in the Atacama Desert; the region has a long history of occupation by the indigenous Atacameno people before the arrival of the Spanish.
