Burial towers (called chullpas or chulpas locally) are quite common in the Andes of South America, especially the altiplano regions of southern Peru and western Bolivia. Various civilisations built them for their dead, who were often mummified and / or laid to rest in woven baskets or textiles inside them. Chullpas were often built facing to the east and the rising sun, symbolising the life cycle and the rebirth of the dead. These chulpas were built of adobe (mud / clay bricks) and are typical of the style of those found in the vast, barren altiplano plains of the Oruro region in western Bolivia. These ones are at the site of Huanuni Cachu near the Desaguadero Valley, an area with many such sites.
