Owl butterfly Canvas Print

No prizes for guessing how the owl butterfly (Caligo eurilochus) gets its name! Some 20 species of the family can be found in Latin America and they are most active at dusk. They eye is a decoy to scare and distract potential predators, should they decide to attack they will damage the wing rather than the butterfly's body and head. This species is also called the forest giant owl butterfly; the shot was taken in Madidi National Park in Bolivia.
