Plaza Bolivar (named after Simon Bolivar) is one of several squares in Casco Viejo, the historic old quarter of Panama City. The monument was erected in 1926 to mark the centenary of the first Panamerican Congress, which was organized by Bolivar in an attempt to unify the newly independent Latin America countries. The Congress took place inside the Franciscan monastery on the square. The tower is part of San Francisco church. Casco Viejo was added to UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 1997.
