A vicuna (Vicugna vicugna) obligingly models for pictures on the shore of the Salar de Surire in the far north of Chile. The smallest and rarest of South America's wild camelids, they live in the high altitude plains and steppes of Peru, Bolivia, northern Chile and northern Argentina. The Salar is a Ramsar wetland as it is also one of the few places you can see all 3 flamingo species that are found in the high Andes. It is also part of the Lauca Biosphere Reserve, recognised by UNESCO in 1981. The volcanic peak in the background is Cerro Chuquiananta (5560m / 18,240ft).
