Description
The Alcala Gateway / Puerta de Alcala is one of Madrid's most famous and important landmarks. The name comes from the Arabic word al-qala for fortification or citadel and the site was originally the start of the old road to the nearby town of Alcala (an older, smaller gate nce stood there). It was designed by Francesco Sabatini and inaugurated in 1778 as part of King Charles III's plans to improve and enlarge Madrid.
