Description
The Milky Way above salt cones on the Salar de Uyuni as the sky starts to lighten and turns a wonderful deep blue before dawn. The streak on the right of the image is a passing satellite. The Salar de Uyuni in south west Bolivia is the world's largest salt flat, covering 10,582 square km / 4,086 square miles at an altitude of 3656m / 12,000ft. It sometimes floods (to a depth of only a few cm) during the rainy season, turning the surface into a huge mirror reflecting the skies and stars if there is no wind.
These salt cones are near Colchani village on the shore of the Salar and have been made by the villagers. They are left there for several days in the strong sun so the salt dries out; later they will be collected in trucks and taken to the village to be processed and finally sold as cooking salt throughout Bolivia.
