Description
Penarth is a seaside town on the southern end of the Bay of Cardiff in South Wales, UK, that used to be a very popular holiday resort in Victorian times. Its attractive cast iron pier with a timber decking opened in 1895 and is 750ft / 230m long. Originally it served as a promenade and a dock for steam ship pleasure cruises, these ships were used as minesweepers in World War 1. Much of the pier was damaged by a fire in 1931; the rebuilt version was also damaged several times as the result of ships colliding with it. The current structure is the result of a major restoration project in the 1990s.
