Description
The Andean ibis (Theristicus branickii) is a large, handsome and uncommon ibis found in the high Andean grasslands and paramos of Ecuador, Peru and Bolivia. It's exact status is debated, some authorities still consider it be a subspecies of the very similar black-faced ibis (Theristicus melanopis) which is more common at lower altitudes in mainly southern South America. The black-faced ibis was itself once considered to be a subspecies of the more widespread (especially in more tropical regions) buff-necked ibis (Theristicus caudatus), though it is now recognised as a separate species. Whatever its status, the Andean ibis is a beautiful bird if you manage to get a good view of it!

Lovely bird, James - so unlike our Australian black and white ibis!
James Brunker replied:
The are spectacular if you get a good view, most of the ibis I've seen in Sth America so far have been mainly darker coloured rather than white for some reason
