Description
A view looking down on the orange tiled roofs of the Porto Calem wine and port company cellar and shop in Vila Nova de Gaia, Portugal. Vila Nova de Gaia is on the south bank of the Douro River, opposite the better known neighbouring city of Porto / Oporto on the north bank. It is where many of the port producing companies have their storage cellars / warehouses and outlets, tours of these are one of the main attractions for tourists visiting Porto. Porto Calem was founded in 1859 by the entrepreneur and adventurer Antonio Alves Calem, initially with the aim of exporting to the newly independent Republic of Brazil (at the time Britain and other European countries were the main markets). As the amount of trade and number of international routes grew Calem acquired his own fleet of ships; in 2014, Calem was the leading brand in Portugal selling 2.6 million bottles annually.
