Description
A view of some of the colourful old buildings and orange tiled roofs in the historic La Ribeira district in Porto, Portugal. Situated on the northern side of the River Douro, Ribeira is full of quaint narrow steets and picturesque houses and part of the Historic Centre of Oporto, a UNESCO registered World Heritage Site.
The district is also where many of Porto's most important historic buildings are located. The tower top center is part of San Francisco church / Igreja de Sao Francisco. The yellow building in the foreground is the Pestana Vintage Porto 5 star hotel that overlooks Ribeira's main Praca da Riberia square. The black cloaked figure on yellow top left is the symbol of the Sandeman wine and port company. Sandeman is one of the better known brands of port and sherry wines and was founded in 1790 by the brothers George and David Sandeman from Perth, Scotland. It remained a family business until the drinks company Seagram bought it in 1979; it is now owned by Sogrape.
