Description
A statue of King David playing a harp in front of the main entrance to Santiago de Compostela's cathedral in northwest Spain. The site has been a major pilgrimage destination since the 9th century when, according to legends, the long lost tomb with the body of St James the Great (the apostle who brought Christianity to the Iberian Peninsula) was discovered. King Alfonso II ordered a church to be built on the site; this building has since been replaced and expanded over the centuries resulting in the current cathedral. The scallop shell carved over the entrance has long been the symbol of The Way of St James pilgrimage route. The cathedral and Santiago de Compostela's Old Town were added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1985.
