Description
Light cloud drifts over the old ski hut on Mt Chacaltaya at night and partly obscures the Milky Way. The colour in the clouds and glow beind the hut is from lights in the cities of El Alto and La Paz some 20 miles / 30km away. Chacaltaya is best known for having the world's highest ski lift (the hut is at approx 5200m / 17,050ft); its closeness to Bolivia's capital La Paz meant it was once a popular skiing trip. The old tow lift and wooden hut (which has been lit up by some light painting with a torch in this image) were built by the Club Andino Boliviano in 1939. The mountain is also a high profile and well-studied casualty of climate change - its glacier receded dramatically after 1980 and had all but disappeared by 2009.
