Description
The Milky Way above one of the Moais de Tara, a series of spectacular rock formations at an altitude of around 4300m / 14,100ft in the high plains of the Atacama Desert in northern Chile. They are also known as Los Monjes de la Pacana ("Pacana Monks") as they look like monks and are located near the Pacana Hills that cross the desert nearby. The rocks are of volcanic origin and have been sculpted over time by the strong winds that blow across this harsh yet beautiful landscape.
The glow on the horizon is from the last quarter moon which has just risen, the rock and foreground was lit by some light painting. The clouds of stars to the right of the photo is the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). It is an irregular dwarf galaxy about 160,000 light years away that orbits the Milky Way and is clearly visible in southern hemisphere skies.
