Description
Admiring the Milky Way from the middle of the Salar de Uyuni, the world's largest salt flat covering 10,582 square km / 4,086 square miles, in south west Bolivia. The clear skies and high altitudes (the Salar is at 3656m / 12,000ft above sea level) in the southern hemisphere can make for stunning views of the stars and the Milky Way, especially as the region is generally very dry. One could easily imagine you are looking to make contact with extraterrestial life somewhere out there......
The yellowish glow on the horizon left of centre are the lights of Uyuni village maybe 20km /15 miles away, the other lights are vehicles driving on the Salar. These salt cones are near Colchani village on the shore of the Salar and have been made by the villagers. They are left there for several days in the strong sun so the salt dries out; later they will be collected in trucks and taken to the village to be processed and finally sold as cooking salt throughout Bolivia.
