Description
A clump of yellow ichu grass (Jarava ichu, common all across the Andean altiplano regions) pokes through the snow in Sajama National Park in western Bolivia. These winter snowfalls, caused by cold fronts coming up from the south, transform the altiplano steppes into a harsh yet strangely beautiful landscapes. The lake in the view is Laguna Huana Kota, one of several shallow lakes in the region. The snowfalls are also an important source of water for lakes like these, winter is normally the dry season and they can dry out after a few months without any sort of precipitation.
