Description
An evening view over the port city of Arica, taken from the El Morro headland that overlooks the city. Arica is the northernmost city in Chile and only a few kilometres from the Peru border. The city used to belong to Peru until it was taken by Chilean forces in 1880 during the War of the Pacific and officially became part of Chile at the end of the war with the signing of the Treaty of Ancón in 1883. The white building at the bottom is the former terminal of the Arica - La Paz railway, built to connect Bolivia to the Pacific Ocean and completed in 1913.
