Description
A view the art deco style Bank of America Building at 10 Light Street in Baltimore from Hopkins Plaza. At 155m (509ft) high and 37 stories, it was the tallest building south of New York in the United States when it was built in 1924 and is still the 2nd tallest building in Baltimore. It was designed by the firm of Taylor and Fisher, and completed in eighteen months at a cost of then US$3 million. Construction was done using Indiana sandstone and local brick over a steel frame. On the left is the needle-like William Donald Schaefer Building, the 4th tallest building in Baltimore. It was completed by Merritt Savings and Loan in 1986 (and originally known as Merritt Tower), has 37 floors and is 493ft / 150m high.
On this visting a building next to the Plaza had recently been demolished and was a fenced off empty building site, opening up this view of the skyscrapers. The Germanic-style building bottom right is the Hansa Haus, built in 1911 for the Savings Bank of Baltimore and their tenant Albert Schumacher and Company, a German shipping agent. The building is the only Germanic-style building in Baltimore and is designed to resemble a medieval courthouse standing in Halberstadt, Germany.
