Description
A view of part of Dailey’s Park, which is also home to the Garrett County Historical Society Museum, in Oakland, Maryland. This park is named in honor of John and Ann Rebecca Dailey, who owned and operated the Glades Hotel in Oakland from 1859 to 1881. The building in which the museum is housed is a reduced size replica of the former Deer Park Hotel, which was a famous resort in the small town of Deer Park in the nearby Appalachian Mountains. The original hotel was built by the B&O Railroad and opened on July 4th, 1873. In its heyday it was one of the most exclusive mountain resorts in the eastern USA, former guests included various US Presidents. The Great Depression led to the hotel closing in 1929, and it was finally destroyed by a fire in the early 1940s. The gazebo on the left of this image is the restored original from the former hotel grounds.
