Description
A hoarding of Ernesto "Che" Guevara on top of an apartment building in Camaguey, Cuba. Murals and hoardings such as this with slogans exhorting people to follow his example are a common sight all over Cuba. "¡Hasta la victoria siempre!" ("Until victory, always!") is one of Che's most famous phrases. Che was an Argentinian medical student who became a left wing revolutionary as the result of the poverty and harsh conditions he saw while traveling through Latin America as a student. He was Fidel Castro's 2nd in command during the Cuban Revolution and held several important posts in the Cuban government. He was executed by the Bolivian military on 9th October 1967. He has become something of a hero and cultural icon to left wing movements worldwide and face is often seen all over Latin America. This image of him is a version of the famous "El Guerrillero Heroico" / "Heroic Guerrilla Fighter" photograph taken by the great Cuban photographer Alberto Korda in 1960. The photo is the basis for most of the modern images of Che and as a result is thought to be possibly the most reproduced photograph of all time.
