Description
A twilight view with the crescent new moon over the River Douro and the historic La Ribeira district of Porto's Old Town. Situated on the northern side of the River Douro, Ribeira is full of quaint narrow steets and picturesque houses and part of the Historic Centre of Oporto, a UNESCO registered World Heritage Site. In the distance is the modern reinforced concrete Ponte da Arrabida bridge, the furthest downstream of the city's bridges. It carries a motorway across the river between Porto and Vila Nova de Gaia (on the left / south side of the river). Construction started in May 1957 and the bridge opened in June 1963. At the time of its completion the 890ft / 270m main span was the longest of any concrete-arch bridge in the world.
