Description
If there is sufficient spring rainfall the southern part of Chile's Atacama Desert (the world's driest) and coastal dunes can burst into flower. This phenomena is known locally as El Desierto Florido (The Flowering Desert) and occurs roughly twice a decade. Many of the species that flower are endemic to the region; this one is known locally as Renilla (Calandrinia speciosa) and is one of the more common species that flower at this time.
