Description
A thick-legged flower beetle (Oedemera nobilis) on the flower of a bramble or common blackberry bush (Rubus fruticosus). They are a common and distinctive beetle in most of western Europe, especially Mediterranean regions (where they are also found in North Africa). Since the mid 1990s they have also expanded to the British Isles and are now quite common in southern England too. This is a female, only the males have the thick bulbous hind legs which give the species its name. Brambles are common throughout the UK and picking the dark juicy blackberry fruit is a popular autumn pastime. The blackberries are commonly used for making jams, pies and in baking.
