Description
Rock formations in the Cordillera de Sal near San Pedro de Atacama in northern Chile and distant peaks glow in the late afternoon light. The formations in the foreground are part of the so-called Valle de la Muerte / Valley of Death. The peaks in the distance are the conical Licancabur (5915m / 19,410ft) and Juriques (5705m / 18,715ft) volcanos on the Bolivian border. The Atacama Desert stretches for over 1000km between the Pacific Ocean and the Andes and is the world's driest and probably oldest desert. In some areas rain has never been recorded, geological research suggests the region has been continuously arid for many millions of years.
