Description
A view from Incahuasi Island in the middle of the Salar de Uyuni in south west Bolivia before dawn. The Salar de Uyuni is the world's largest salt flat, covering 10,582 square km / 4,086 square miles. Its huge expanse and thin dry air at high altitude can make for some surreal atmospheric affects. This image clearly shows the Earth's shadow (deep blue above horizon); the mauve band above it is known as the Belt of Venus or Venus's Girdle. The peak on the horizon is the Tunupa volcano (5320m / 17,460ft). The cacti found on islands in the middle of the Salar and around are Echinopsis atacamensis (pasacana subspecies), which grow in Bolivia and northern Argentina.
