Description
The setting sun's last rays catch the facade of Madrid's Almudena cathedral (or Santa Maria la Real de La Almudena to give it its official name). The cathedral was built on the site of a medieval mosque that was destroyed in 1083. Despite plans to build a cathedral in Madrid being discussed as early as the 16th century work on the building didn't begin until 1879. The Spanish Civil War stopped construction and the project was abandoned until 1950; the cathedral was finally completed in 1993.
