Description
The Chesapeake and Ohio Canal runs alongside the Potomac River from Washington DC to Cumberland in Maryland. The first sections opened in 1830 and the Canal operated until 1924. The original plans were for the Canal to cross the Allegheny Mountains to the Ohio River but this section was never built due to financial problems and competition from the railroads. This image shows the period Charles F Mercer barge being drawn by mules on a restored section of the Canal near Lock 20, close to the Great Falls on the Potomac River.
