Description
A view looking west across part of the Chinchero plateau with the Cordillera Vilcabamba range in the background. The plateau is a beautiful and important agricultural area close to Cusco, Peru. It was famed in Inca times for its potatoes and several varieties are still widely grown here along with many other crops that thrive at higher altitudes (including barley, wheat and beans). This shot was taken in the winter dry season, when the rich, fertile soil of the plateau and dry grasslands are a wonderful mixture of browns and yellows. In the summer wet season the crops cover the area in a variety of greens.
The main snow capped peak in this image is Mt. Salcantay ("Wild" or "Savage Mountain" in Quechua), at 6271m / 20,575ft the highest peak in the Cordillera Vilcabamba range and 2nd highest in the Cusco Region. Salcantay is close to both the famous Inca Trail and Machu Picchu; it is visible from Machu Picchu on a clear day and alternative versions of the classic Inca Trail pass very close to it.

Thank you LA Feldstein, it's one of my favourite place in the Cusco area, gorgeous views and lovely people, there's a lot of culture and history here too
