Description
Early morning sunlight illuminates totora reed beds (Schoenoplectus californicus subsp. tatora) growing near the shore of the Inner Lake (called Winaymarka, Huinaymarca or Lago Menor locally). The mountain in the image is Mt Ancohuma (6427m / 21,085ft) in the Cordillera Real range of the Andes, Bolivia's 3rd highest peak. Its name in the native Aymara language is Janq'u Uma or "white water" (janq'u white, uma water, other spellings include Janq'uma, Jankho Uma, and Jankhouma). Totora reeds grow in huge numbers in the shallower parts of Lake Titicaca and are a very important habitat and refuge for wildlife.
