Description
Sunlight and shadows on a volcanic rock outcrop and the high altitude desert of the Puna de Atacama in northern Chile. The Puna de Atacama is the high desert plateau in the Andes which is shared by Argentina and Chile. Much of the region is covered in volcanos and barren volcanic desert, some lower, more sheltered parts are sparsely vegetated, usually with tufts of tough, yellow ichu grass. This image was taken in the Santa Rosa sector of the Nevado de Tres Cruces National Park in the Region III de Atacama.

James Brunker replied:
Thank you VIVA, it always amazes me how such barren, desolate landscapes can have so much of interest and an amazing variety of colours. I'm sure the Australian deserts are similar.
