Description
A view looking down to the old ski hut on Mt Chacaltaya from the path to the summit. Chacaltaya is best known for once having the world's highest ski lift (the hut is at approx 5200m / 17,050ft); its closeness to Bolivia's administrative capital La Paz meant it was a popular skiing trip. The lift is no longer in use, the glacier (that used to cover the rocks bottom left of the image) started receding dramatically in the early 1980s and had all but disappeared by 2009. Any snow cover on the mountain is now the result of snowfalls rather than a permanent icefield. The old tow lift and wooden hut were built by the Club Andino Boliviano in 1939.
