Maize has been a very important staple in the Americas and Andean cultures for millennia and was a sacred crop to many, including the Incas. This image, taken in the Chinchero market near Cusco in Peru, shows just a few of the many varieties available. The Sacred Valley near Cusco was an important maize producing region in Inca times and still is today.
