Description
One of the most spectacular and famous sights in the Argentine Patagonia, the sheer granite walls of Mt Fitzroy (3405m / 11,170ft) are one of the highlights of the Los Glaciares National Park, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1981. The glacial lake at its base is called Laguna de los Tres (or "Lake of the Three") and is named in honour of the three Frenchmen whose expedition became the first to scale the peak in 1952. The peak to the left is Aguja (or "Needle") Poincenot, named after the the French climber Jacques Poincenot who died during the first expedition. Mt Fitz Roy itself is named after Robert FitzRoy, the English naval office who was captain of the HMS Beagle on its famous 2nd voyage. The peak's local name is El Chaltén, from the native Tehuelche word meaning "smoking mountain" after the cloud that often rises from its summit. The nearby village from which nearly all tourists use as a base for visiting the area has the same name.
