Description
The Phoenix Shot Tower in Baltimore is a circular red brick shot tower and the only surviving one of four that were built in the city. It is 234ft / 71.4m tall and when it was completed in 1828 it was the tallest structure in the United States (until 1846). It was used to make shot and bullets: molten lead was dropped from a platform at the top of the tower through a sieve and into a vat of cold water at the bottom of the tower. After passing through the sieve the lead formed small spherical balls and partially cooled as it fell. The tower stopped producing shot in 1892. The flag is the Baltimore city flag.
