Description
A detail of sunlight and cloud shadows on valleys in the high altitude deserts of the Puna de Atacama, a vast, desolate volcanic plateau in the central Andes shared by Chile and Argentina. This image was taken from the flanks of the Copiapo volcano, also called Azufre, the Spanish word for sulphur / sulfur). The area has long been mined for this and other minerals, which give the landscape the variety of browns, and earthy tones. I also liked the flowing rounded landforms of the hillsides and valleys in this particular area. Lots of interesting details to explore with a telephoto lens and the ever-changing patterns of sunlight and cloud shadows moving across the landscape were fascinating to watch. The small white patches scattered about are the remnants of snowfalls and small snowfields.
