Description
A detail of rocky outcrops and valleys in the high altitude deserts of the Puna de Atacama, a vast, desolate volcanic plateau in the central Andes shared by Chile and Argentina. This image was taken from the flanks of the Copiapo volcano, also called Azufre, the Spanish word for sulphur / sulfur). The area has long been mined for this and other minerals, which give the landscape the variety of browns, earthy tones and orange colors. I also liked the contrast of the flowing rounded landforms of the hillsides and valleys with the rocky ridges in this particular area, lots of interesting details to explore with a telephoto lens! The small white patches scattered about are the remnants of snowfalls and small snowfields. Most of the very limited fresh water in the Puna comes from snowfalls; the region has historically been so arid that there are very few glaciers and little evidence of glaciation in the past.
