Description
Sweet chestnut (Castanea sativa) leaves and catkins, taken in the High Weald of Kent, southeast England) in late spring. Also called the Spanish chestnut, the tree is native to southern Europe and Asia Minor and has been introduced to most of western Europe, a process started by the Romans. This is the tree that produces chestnuts, a sweetish nut that is a popular snack when roasted and also used a lot in cooking.
