Description
The impressive cliffs of a rock formation called El Anfiteatro / The Amphitheatre in the famous Valle de la Luna / Moon Valley near San Pedro de Atacama in northern Chile. The peaks in the background are the conical Licancabur (L, 5915m / 19,410ft) and Juriques (R, 5705m / 18,715ft) volcanos on the Bolivian border. The Atacama Desert is the world's driest and probably oldest desert. It can be a magical place with surreal lighting, especially early and late in the day when the heat is also less intense. As the sky darkens after sunset and the contrast drops the rocks and sand dunes sometimes seem to glow for a short period.
