Description
A fine old milestone with a metal plate attached to a stone surrounded by lesser celandine flowers, taken in Southborough in Kent, southeast England. Southborough is between Tonbridge and Tunbridge Wells on what was the old turnpike road between London and Hastings on the south coast. The milestone dates from the 19th century and is close to the Hand & Sceptre Hotel, which was an important coaching inn on that road. Tunbridge 3 refers to Tonbridge, which was commonly spelt Tunbridge at the time; by the 1870s the current spelling of Tonbridge was more common and it was officially changed in 1893.
Lesser celandines (Ficaria verna, formerly Ranunculus ficaria) are a member of the buttercup family and are among the first to appear in spring in the UK. They are a common sight in especially damper areas of woodlands, hedgerows and countryside.
