Description
The Atacama Desert coast of northern Chile and southern Peru is probably one of the most rugged and inhospitable on the planet. The Atacama is the world's driest and probably oldest desert, geological research suggests the region has been continuously arid for many millions of years. While the land is barren the Pacific Ocean is rich in marine life, the cold Humboldt Current supports one of the world's richest fishing grounds and large colonies of seabirds, sea lions, seals and other wildlife. This image shows Playa Blanca near Pisagua, Tarapaca Region I.
