Description
The coat of arms of the City of Cardiff (the capital of Wales) on the base of an obelisk outside in front of the City Hall, where the local city government is based. The motto "Y Ddraig Goch ddyry cychwyn" translates as "The Red Dragon will lead the way". The Red Dragon (the emblem of Wales) holding a flag on the shield in the centre is also the city flag. The oldest recorded use of the dragon to symbolise Wales dates to around AD 829. It may well have older origins - it is popularly supposed to have been the battle standard of King Arthur and other ancient Celtic leaders. The coast of arms also features a Welsh goat (an ancient emblem of the mountains of Wales), a hippocamp or sea-horse, and above the helmet a Tudor Rose and three ostrich feathers, the badge of the Princes of Wales.
