Description
Dramatic clouds caused by thermal currents rising from the vast high altitude plains above the Payachatas ("twin" in the Aymara language) volcanos, which dominate views of the spectacular Lauca National Park in the far north of Chile. The Park is also part of the Lauca Biosphere Reserve, recognised by UNESCO in 1981. The peaks lie on the Bolivia border and are individually Pomerape (L, 6282 m / 20,610ft) and Parinacota (R, 6342m / 20,805ft). This image was taken towards the end of the winter dry season when snow cover on the mountains is often less than normal.
