Description
Laguna Negra / Black Lake is an unusual lake at around 4400m / 14,430ft in the high plains of the Atacama Desert in northern Chile near the Argentina border. I've never seen a lake that looks like a giant oil slick before, nor an explanation for the colour though it looks like it may be due in part to algae and / or bacteria. The white and orange salt / mineral patches make it look even more surreal. The volcano is Cerro Losloyo (5370m / 17,620ft).
