Description
The streets of the Old Town of the historic city of Lijiang in Yunnan in SW China slowly come to life at dawn. The city has a history going back more than 800 years and was an important stop on trade routes between Sichuan, Yunnan and Tibet; it is also where the Silk Road in the south joins the Ancient Chama (Tea and Horse) Roads. Lijiang was also an important economic and cultural communication center for the various ethnic groups that live in the region, such as the Naxi, Han, Tibetan and Bai peoples. The Old Town of Lijiang was added to UNESCO's List of World Heritage Sites in 1997.
