Description
A twilight view of Santo Domingo convent in Cusco, Peru, built above the foundation walls of the Coricancha or Sun Temple. Cusco was the Inca's capital city and the Coricancha was the most important temple in the Inca empire. Inti, the sun god, was their most important deity and the Inca kings were believed to be his living representatives. The temple walls were originally covered in gold and the temple full of gold ornaments. The gold was looted by the Spanish during the Conquest; they also destroyed much of the temple and built the convent over the foundations, a move designed to show the dominance of the new rulers and their religion.
