Description
An elderly lady wearing the red and black traditional dress spins wool as she walks along a stone path on Taquile Island in Lake Titicaca, Peru. Taquile is usually visited from Puno which is about 3hours away by boat. Its inhabitants speak Quechua (unusual in the Peruvian altiplano regions where Aymara is the main language) and still strongly preserve their traditional way of life. The women are expert weavers and can often be seen spinning wool as they walk across the island. Taquile and its textile art traditions were originally declared a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2005 and added to UNESCO's List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2008.
