Description
A lady shields here eyes from the sun as she sits in an ornate old doorway in Juli, Peru, between Puno and the Bolivia border. Juli was the most important town in the Lake Titicaca region in the early colonial period. The Dominicans arrived there in 1553, followed by the Jesuits in 1576. As a result the town has not just 1 but 4 impressive colonial churches; it was the centre from which missionaries converted the people of the Andean altiplano until the expulsion of the Jesuits from South America in 1767. As well as the churches there were many fine colonial buildings in the town, this wonderful doorway on the main Plaza de Armas square once belonged to the Casa de la Inquisicion / House of the Inquisition.
