Description
Arguably the most famous archaeological site in South America, the Inca city of Machu Picchu sits high on a ridge above the Urubamba River not far from Cusco. Probably built during the reign of the Inca Pachacutec in the 15th century, it was never found by the Spanish and remained unknown outside the local area until the arrival of the American explorer Hiram Bingham in 1911. This image shows the so called Watchman's Hut with rainy season storm clouds over the Urubamba Canyon in the background. Note the tourists on the terraces a short way below the hut giving a sense of scale.
