Description
A wonderful series of pointed arches in the ruins of Bayham Abbey, which is situated on the border of Kent and East Sussex between Tunbridge Wells and Lamberhurst in southeast England. The abbey was founded in the early 13th century by Premonstratensian monks and suppressed by Cardinal Wolsey in 1525 to fund two new colleges he planned to build. Most of the abbey was built using the distinctive local yellow Wealden sandstone, as are many historic churches and buildings in this part of the UK. The mansion was built in the 19th century as part of improvements and landscaping done on the estate by the Earls of Camden (who owned the estate that included the ruins from the start of the 18th century until 1961).
